Tips For Controlling Oily Skin and Hormonal Acne

No makeup (besides eyebrow pencil). My skin used to be terrible!

You wouldn’t know it looking at my skin today that I suffered from oily skin and painful cystic hormonal acne along my chin most of my adult life, and especially after stopping birth control pills. Cystic acne is when the pores in your skin become blocked and it leads to infection and inflammation. In my hair loss blog post I talked about the effects of hormonal changes after stopping birth control. My skin definitely suffered and after trying prescribed acne medications that did more harm than good, I did some research on natural supplements that help control acne and found an amazing face wash and moisturizer that drastically changed my skin from the inside out.

1.) Pantothenic Acid aka B5: Vitamin B5 helps regulate the amount of oil your sebaceous glands produce, among other functions like helping the body properly use protein and fat. Oftentimes people don’t realize that they have a deficiency of B5, which can cause their skin to produce more oil. Overproduction of oil can lead to blocked pores which cause cystic acne. I take 1 B5 vitamin a day to help with my oily skin.

2.) Magnesium: Magnesium has many functions in the body like regulating blood sugar levels, nerve functions and immune health. Like B5, Magnesium deficiency can also negatively impact your skin. Magnesium helps regulate hormones and lowers cortisol levels which can lead to healthier skin and decrease acne. I take 1 Magnesium pill a day.

3.) Spearmint Capsules: Spearmint is a natural androgen blocker. Androgen is a male hormone, however, it is present in women as well. Too much androgen in women can cause hormonal acne and hair loss. I take 2 spearmint capsules a day to help regulate androgen levels.

4.) Spearmint tea: Spearmint tea has the same benefits as the capsules. I LOVE drinking tea, and this one tastes amazing so I might as well clear my skin while I enjoy a cup.

Cetaphil Pro for Oily Skin, Oil Removing Foam Wash: I felt like I won the lottery when I found this face wash! As I continued my search for cures for my oily skin I came across this wash and it changed everything. This face wash removes the excess oil from my face, but still leaves it moisturized and it helps to prevent my skin from becoming too oily throughout the day. It doesn’t have a scent and does not irritate my skin at all, perfect for sensitive oily skin! I wash my face with this in the morning and at night.

Cetaphil Pro for Oily Skin, Oil Absorbing Moisturizer: After using the foam wash morning and night I apply this moisturizer. It has sunscreen and it’s moisturizing but it doesn’t leave my skin feeling greasy at all. It’s also a great base for my foundation!

I have been using this combination of supplements and skin care for almost 2 years, along with drinking at least 2 liters of water a day and it has done amazing things for my skin. I will occasionally get a blemish on my chin, but I rarely have breakouts like I used to. Please note that I am NOT a dermatologist and I highly suggest you talk to your doctor before starting any new supplements. Everyone’s body is different, just sharing what has worked for me.
